FAQ

PMSC General

How many travel teams are now in the club?

Most years, there are normally about 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams, ranging in age from U8 to U19.

Our USL program has 2 seasons and over 900 players

How are coaches recruited?

Coaches in our club may start out in our developmental program (USL) and may work with the players as they progress to travel. Although all of our parent coaches are 100% volunteers, the club strives to attract a coaching candidate that possesses a knowledge of the game of soccer. This might not always be the case, so coach mentoring and NYSWYSA certification is encouraged.

Are coaches screened before they become an active coach? If so, what is the procedure?

Any person interested in coaching a travel team with Pittsford Mustangs must first complete and submit their application to the Board of Director's.

Once approved by the Board the Risk Management process is started.  Risk Management approval is required for all individuals desiring to coach or manage any team participating in the Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL) or New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA). This background check is performed by NYSWYSA. All individuals must be cleared prior to participation in a league or NYSWYSA sanctioned event.

There is a fee for an approved Risk Management pass and this is covered by Pittsford Mustangs.  Risk Management passes are good for 2 years, lost cards maybe replaced but at the expense of the coach or manager.

Travel Teams

What soccer skills are required to be considered for travel soccer?

Participation in a house league or similar program is encouraged before making the commitment to travel soccer.

Some age appropriate players will be "travel ready" for U8 and some may not.

"Travel ready" means the player is looking for a more competitive program, has above average skills, a strong drive to develop their soccer abilities and are ready to make the necessary time commitment to play travel soccer.

At what age can a child play travel?

Since Pittsford Mustangs participates in the RDYSL (Rochester District Youth Soccer League) we are bound by their age rules for our travel teams.

The youngest player allowed on an RDYSL team is U8. The player must turn 8 on or before July 31 of the season year.

The following link is to the age matrix on the RDYSL website.

Can any travel team in the club have their own Web site.

Yes - please start by using this link.

It is a great way to keep communication with your team families during the season.

You can start your own site and completely manage it with news, articles, calendar entries, photos... just about anything you want to post.

What are typical time commitments per week in the winter, spring, summer?

Winter indoor commitments are generally once a week for approximately 1 hour from January to April.

Spring is considered the start of the outdoor Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL) season with 1-2 games weekly from mid May through the end of July. Typically, outdoor practices are 1-3 times/week and range from 1-2 hours.

Number and duration of practice are at the coach's discretion.  Teams may also participate in 1 or more weekend tournaments during the RDYSL season.

How long is the practice season?

2013 season:

November 1 thru December 21 : indoor age group training and evaluations

Jan thru April 30: team indoor trainig

May 1 - teams go outdoors

Mid May thru July 31 - RDYSL season, games, tournaments and practices

How does the indoor practice schedule work?

Teams are allocated indoor practice time January thru April.  The club purchases and allocates all indoor practice space to each team within the club. Our indoor coordinator works with each coach and team's request to ensure proper scheduling while attempting to minimize conflicts. Typically, younger teams practice at the same times as other young teams while the older teams practice with their appropriate age groups.

Coaches will receive an email for team time sign ups

Who determines the final indoor practice schedules and can it be changed?

Each team requests a time slot of time from the coordinator prior to the start of the indoor season. While teams are not always guaranteed to receive the times requested, the coordinator makes every attempt to schedule practice time with the appropriate age groups. Times can be moved, but is not encouraged. Sometimes a team elects to schedule three weeks on and one week off throughout the practice season. These requests can be accommodated and this extra time can be reallocated.

How long is the RDYSL outdoor season?

RDYSL season runs Mid May through July 31st.  Be prepared for games up to July 31st.

There are 12 RDYSL scheduled league games between mid May and the end of July. Many teams also participate in at least one tournament during the season.

How are teams placed in RDYSL division

The division a team is placed in for the RDYSL league is done by RDYSL.  Pittsford Mustangs does not make the decision on which division a team is placed.  Teams request a division via a form with supporting information - this form is submitted to their RDYSL age division coordinator.  That information along with prior season records and total number team's participating at each level is taken into consideration by RDYSL for team placement.

Pittsford Mustangs can advocate and challenge a placement but ultimately it is an RDYSL decision.

What days and times are games played?

Game schedule - days and times for particular age groups are determined by the Rochester District Youth Soccer League(RDYSL).

The 2013 schedule is not yet available but  you can access the RDYSL website (www.rdysl.com) to see what night’s age groups have historically been playing. You will also be able to see the 2013 schedule when it becomes available.

Are players expected to play in out of town tournaments?

The club provides reimbursement for one tournament per team.

However, at the coaches discretion, they may choose to have their teams participate in additional tournaments-local and/or out of town. Decisions about such tournaments are made at the team level.

Are our players insured for possible injury and hospitalization?

Each player in the club is insured through the New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA). Insured persons are covered for injuries (or death) resulting directly and independently of all other causes, from accidents occurring while participating in the following covered activities:

• Scheduled games, team practice sessions or sponsored activities, provided they are under the direct supervision of a team official; or sanctioned local or national tournaments as a member of a contestant team.

• Organized, supervised group travel as authorized by the Policyholder directly to and from a covered event. The plan does not provide coverage for: (1) intentionally self-inflicted injury; (2) air travel except as a fare-paying passenger on a regularly scheduled airline on a scheduled flight; (3) injuries resulting from other than Covered Activities; (4) loss resulting from sickness or disease, except bacterial infection which occurs through an accidental wound.

Registration Costs

Why is their a tryout fee for the 2013 season?

Each child that registers for tryouts is insured and receives a t-shirt.  These costs are just over $15.00 and incurred by PMSC for every player that attends tryouts - regardless if that child continues with the club.

Why has the Pittsford Mustang Soccer Club increased their registration fees, in addition to charging a tryout fee?

Pittsford Mustangs operating costs per player has far exceeded the price charged to the community for several years.  In order to continue to provide quality indoor facilities and training an increase has been necessary to align our income and expenses.

Pittsford Mustangs is a "not for profit" and the intention is not to produce extra income or run at a deficit but to come close to "breaking even".  By aligning our fees closer to our expenses that is exactly what we are doing.

Each year The Board of Directors looks at our income and expenses to make sure we are doing our due diligence for the club's income and expenses. To continue to be a strong and growing club we need a healthy balance sheet.

Pittsford Mustangs is currently using it's resources for many field improvements in the Pittsford community.  This is one way to improve our club and your child's soccer experience.

What is included in the Mustangs travel registration fee?

Many of these costs are incurred before the season actually begins.

  • Indoor training and field time
  • Uniform ( jersey, alternate jersey, shorts, socks)
  • Backpacks  ( only issued to a player their first year)
  • RDYSL fees
  • Referee Fees

Indoor Evaluations

What are the dates and times for the indoor evaluation sessions?

At the end of the September outdoor evaluations each player will know the dates, day and time their age group will be training indoors.

The indoor training for all age groups will run for 7 weeks from November 1, 2012 through December 21, 2012.

All indoor evaluation sessions will be at:

Brighton Sports Zone, 3195 Brighton Henrietta Town Line Road, Rochester NY 14623

or

TurfTime, 3750 Monroe Avenue Pittsford, NY 14534

If my child is registered but was not able to attend the outdoor evaluations do we need to do anything prior to attending the indoor evaluation sessions?

You will need to contact Nancy Mantle (nancymantle@yahoo.com) to make arrangements to pick up the numbers t shirt that will be assigned to your child. This t- shirt must be worn to  all indoor sessions as it will be the way players are identified.

If I have a conflict with my indoor evaluation session what are my options?

While we encourage players to attend the indoor sessions that they are registered for we realize that conflicts arise. For those exceptions a player can attend another session closest to their age group. The player will have to inform the coaching staff what age group they are registered upon arrival.

What are the chances my child will go through the indoor training/evaluations and not make a team? What are the factors that play into this?

It is our intent to have only "travel ready" players continue with the indoor evaluations and training.  We try our best to place as many players on teams as possible.

Factors to be considered include:

  • player’s level of skill and commitment
  • appropriate number of coaches
  • RDYSL roster sizes
  • age appropriate and grade appropriate placement
  • playing up requirements.

When are teams formed?

U8 to U11 players will be receiving their team assignments by the end of the indoor training.  The indoor training will occur from November 1, 2012 thru December 21, 2012.

U12 and up players will be receiving their team assignments by October 1, 2012.

What happens after the indoor evaluation sessions end?

Coach’s sign up for indoor “team” practice time and teams will begin their team training.

Team sessions are once a week at Brighton Sports Zone or TurfTime and are determined by the coach based on availability.  This is usually January through April.

May 1st team's go outdoors and practice schedule is determined by coach/team availability.

What are the plans to accommodate the most number of players to avoid cuts?

Since the Mustangs participate in the Rochester District Youth  Soccer League (RDYSL) we are obligated to maintain team roster  sizes set by RDYSL.  There may be some teams of combined ages,  players may also be place age appropriately or grade appropriately depending on their skill level. The number of  teams will also be governed by the number of coaches and assistant coaches.
